I should have guessed; looks like it may well screw up on photos. But almost all of them are originally from Instagram, and I have the originals.

Using [Quill](http://quillp3k.io) gives me the option to create a new post as a reply. Again, my useless brain cannot remember whether Quill speaks Markdown. And currently, the bookmark opens in the same window, which means I have to remember to copy the URL I want to reply to.

Seconds later: ... Nope, Quill does not speak Markdown.

Finally reached a key milestone in the deliverables of a big work-for-money, so was able to treat myself to an excellent video from the [IndieWebSummit 2017](https://2017.indieweb.org).

First up, for me, [Lillian Karabaic](http://anomalily.net) offering [A brief history of my website](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VGX8iBWrTE&index=4&list=PLk3TtIJ31hqrLIPqz55TczawWu-30cnXM). I noted a few things.

First, the video, audio and editing were top notch. Huge kudos to everyone who made this happen. They say content trumps technical quality, and it does, but when you're not fighting quality, the value of the content is so much more obvious.

Second, and much more important, Lillian's trajectory mirrors my own and, not surprisingly, I can relate strongly to everything she said -- good and bad -- about the #indieweb. The help available is stellar, the documentation isn't great (I hope to work on that) and it is hard to evangelise.

So much left to do ...

Why the indieweb

Richard MacManus is indiewebifying his site, and [had this to say](https://richardmacmanus.com/2017/06/22/openness-rivers-indieweb/):

I’m less interested in the technologies themselves (like microformats and webmention) and more interested in how they’re being used in the wider Web community. Not dissimilar to my interests when I started ReadWriteWeb. But of course to do this, I need to stand on the shoulders of the developers who build the tools.

All of which sums up my own position exactly. I'd go slightly further. I'm not as interested in how the technologies are being used in the wider Web community as I am in putting them to use myself.

*p.s. A major drawback of Withknown's excellent engine is that it doesn't allow New Posts to be replies, and that means I can't use the MarkDown formatting.*

If one is careful and marks up the html just so, then I suspect that Known will allow you to create a post and have it show as a reply. This post (and not a status update or a reply post) will serve as a test. Of course, I'm not sure how one would add the proper class of u-in-reply-to with markup, but I'll bet someone somewhere does this in a way that Jeremy could potentially replicate.

The sound of your original post and the reply are making me think that you're manually opening up your site in a browser, clicking on the "Status Update" piece of the UI, then manually clicking on the "Reply to a site" button, and then manually cutting and pasting the URL in for replies every time. Does this mean you're not using the browser bookmarklet to generate all of your responses?!!

If this is the case, then hie thee to https://stream.jeremycherfas.net/account/settings/tools/ and drag the bookmarklet button (which likely has your name on it) to your browser bar! Then when you're on a web page you'd like to respond to, click on the bookmarklet to pull up a slightly more sophisticated UI (pictured in link) that will allow you to share, reply, bookmark, RSVP, like, and repost as you prefer (depending on your plugin collection). When you choose the "reply" tab, the UI should have the "reply to a site" URL pre-filled for your convenience! Type your reply, choose syndication destinations, and click "publish".

In some sense this will make your replies only replies, your status updates only updates, and your posts articles that can only mention other articles (unless you manually do what I'd done before). In the initial case I outlined above, you're manually creating statuses which technically get turned into replies by manually adding the reply URL. The difference can be seen in visiting/comparing the URLs http://stream.jeremycherfas.net/content/statusupdates/ and http://stream.jeremycherfas.net/content/replies/.

I pray that you've known this all along, you'll forgive my "indiesplain", and that I'm not catching the subtlety of your original post. The Known bookmarklet is 90% of the beauty of the system and drastically cuts back on the manual 'til it hurts portion of the program. And of course if it doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll make a video of the process or we can do a screen share if necessary. I'm addicted to bookmarklets of all kinds, but realize that not everyone uses them the way (or to the extreme) that I do.

If not, I'm not sure I fully understand your original issue or why you'd want to create a new post (with a title) to do replies to others' content, and I'll have to revisit the issue you're having.

I've been moaning to anyone who'll listen that there seems to be something wrong with Known; Micropubs could not seem to find the syndication targets. And other people had the same problem, I believe. But after a really enjoyable virtual Homebrew Web Club meeting, the problem might after all be at my end.

@zegnat created a fresh install of Known as we watched, hooked it up to Twitter, and was instantly rewarded with Quill seeing his syndication target, which it resolutely refused to do on my instance of Known. (It failed actually to syndicate, but that's a separate issue.)

So, now I need to try a fresh install myself. And as @Jeena suggested, better to do that on a new and different subdomain than risk messing everything up.

Alas, there is no way on Earth I can do this until near the end of the month.
